The Light of Peace

Miori Odamaki / Oil on canvas / 227x158mm / 2021

August 15, 2005 was the 20th anniversary of Minato City’s declaration as a city of peace. To commemorate this event, the Light of Peace was placed in the Municipal Shiba Park. The flame burning here represents the Peace Flame in Hiroshima City, the Peace Flame in Fukuoka prefecture’s Yame City, and the Nagasaki Peace Flame in Nagasaki City. Through this Light of Peace, the calamity of war and value of peace are passed on to future generations.

At the same time, “Atomic Bombing Aogiri II” and “Atomic Bombing Camport Tree II” that survived the charred soil of Hiroshimia and Nagasaki where the atomic bomb was dropped are planted from the seeds near this light. These facilities, with their wishes for peace, have become as symbol of the park

About the design of the Light of Peace
Ideas for the design of the Light of Peace were collected from children. Using keywords from their ideas, such as ‘Earth’ and ‘Flame,’ the design was created around the concept of a flame that represents the wish of a green earth with everlasting peace, free from nuclear weapons, and abundant with clean water.
